Choosing where to experience Ayahuasca in Ecuador is an important decision. The experience is shaped not only by the medicine, but also by the people guiding it, the safety of the environment, the integrity of the tradition and the relationship the retreat has with the land and local communities.
Since 2008, Feather Crown has focused on offering traditional, responsible and deeply grounded work with Ayahuasca. Our intention is not to recreate an Amazonian ceremony for tourism, but to welcome participants into a living environment where Indigenous knowledge, rainforest and community remain connected.
Guidance From Experienced Indigenous Elders
One of the most important considerations is who leads the ceremonies.
Our retreats are guided by experienced Indigenous elders and healers who have spent decades learning and working within their respective traditions. Depending on the selected retreat, participants may work with elders from Kichwa or Shipibo traditions.
Their knowledge was not acquired through a short course or adapted into a modern therapeutic method. It was developed over many years through direct experience, traditional training and relationships with medicinal plants.

We approach these traditions with humility. Feather Crown does not claim ownership over Indigenous knowledge. Our role is to create the conditions in which experienced elders can carry out their work safely and respectfully.
Safety as a Daily Responsibility
Ayahuasca is powerful and must be approached responsibly. Safety is therefore not an additional feature of our retreats; it is the foundation upon which the entire process is built.
Every applicant completes a detailed screening process covering:
- Medical conditions and health history
- Prescription medications and supplements
- Psychological and emotional readiness
- Previous experiences with psychoactive substances
- Personal intentions and expectations
If we believe that participation would present an unacceptable risk, we say so honestly. During the retreat, nobody is required to drink Ayahuasca, and the final decision about participation in a ceremony always considers the person’s condition at that moment.
Our safety protocols include a sober support team throughout the night, personal assistance when needed and careful observation before, during and after each ceremony.
We do not promise miraculous healing or guarantee particular results. We offer a protected environment in which sincere and sometimes difficult inner work can take place.
A Living Amazonian Environment
Our Ayahuasca retreat center is located beside the Piatúa River in the Ecuadorian Amazon, surrounded by primary rainforest and away from crowded tourist routes.
The forest is not a decorative background to the retreat. It is part of the experience itself.

We intentionally keep our groups small, normally between 6 and 12 participants. This allows us to know each person and remain attentive to individual needs throughout the retreat.

Powerful experiences are not always easy to understand. What happens during a ceremony may continue unfolding long after the immediate effects of Ayahuasca have passed.
We help create a bridge between Indigenous interpretations of the experience and the personal context of international participants.

Ayahuasca cannot be separated from the Amazon. The medicine exists because Indigenous peoples have preserved their knowledge and because living forests and clean rivers continue to sustain the plants, animals and communities of this region.
For us, receiving from the Amazon creates a responsibility to give something back. Reciprocity is therefore not a symbolic promise or a separate charitable project. It is part of how Feather Crown operates.
Our work contributes to the surrounding region by:
- Providing stable and fairly paid employment to local Kichwa families
- Supporting family-owned tourism and construction projects
- Paying Indigenous elders and team members respectfully
- Protecting 23 hectares of rainforest beside the Piatúa River
- Making our facilities available free of charge for Indigenous gatherings
- Working in cooperation with PONAKICSC, which represents 22 local Kichwa communities
- Supporting the continuing defense of the sacred Piatúa River
- Assisting documentary and communication projects focused on Indigenous rights and conservation
Stable local livelihoods are also a form of rainforest protection. When families have sustainable sources of income, they are in a stronger position to remain on their land and resist pressure from mining companies and other extractive interests.
We share these actions not because we consider our responsibility complete, but because reciprocity should be practical, visible and accountable. It is an ongoing relationship that we continue to learn from.
Long-Term Commitment Since 2008
Feather Crown is not a recently created retreat project. We have been working with Ayahuasca and welcoming participants to the Ecuadorian Amazon since 2008.
Over the years, our approach has continued to develop through experience, relationships with Indigenous elders and honest reflection on the responsibilities involved in this work.
