Important: timing and substance restrictions on this page describe Feather Crownโs participation policy, not universal medical advice. Tell us about every medication, supplement and health condition. Some medications must be discontinued far enough in advance to avoid unsafe interactions with ayahuasca. When this is required for safe participation, it is a condition of participation rather than a treatment instruction. You decide whether to make that change and attend. Before changing prescribed medication, we recommend first obtaining information from the clinician who prescribed it about the risks and a safe way to reduce or discontinue it. If you decide to proceed, tell us what you actually changed and when you took the last dose so that we can assess the required interval and eligibility. For evidence and detailed risk context, see our Ayahuasca Safety guide.
Ayahuasca Preparation Before Ceremony
If you are planning to attend an ayahuasca ceremony in Ecuador, preparation begins before you arrive.
We recommend starting your ayahuasca preparation at least 3 days before your first ceremony, and up to one week for certain substances.
Avoid before ceremony:
- Pork
- Alcohol
- Cannabis and recreational drugs
- Other psychoactive substances
- Heavy, fatty, or overly salty foods
Recommended ayahuasca diet:
- Light, simple meals
- Vegetables and fruits
- Low salt and low fat
- Good hydration
Following a clean dieta helps your body become more sensitive to the medicine and supports a deeper experience during your ayahuasca retreat in Ecuador.
On the Day of the Ayahuasca Ceremony
A key part of preparing for ayahuasca is to arrive with a light and well-digested stomach.
On the day of ceremony:
- Eat only lightly earlier in the day
- Avoid heavy or oily foods
- Do not overeat
- Stay hydrated during the day
- Avoid drinking shortly before the ceremony
Arriving physically prepared allows you to enter the ceremony in a more stable and comfortable state.
Mental and Emotional Preparation
Preparing for an ayahuasca ceremony is not only physicalโit also involves your mental and emotional state.
We recommend:
- Abstaining from sexual activity for at least 3 days before ceremony
- Reducing stress and overstimulation
- Slowing down your pace before arrival
- Reflecting on your intention
Arriving calm, present, and open supports a deeper and more grounded experience.
Medications and Ayahuasca Safety
Understanding ayahuasca safety is a critical part of preparation.
Ayahuasca can interact with certain medications and substances.
Do not combine ayahuasca with:
- Antidepressants (SSRIs, MAOIs)
- Antipsychotic medications
- Other psychoactive substances
During the retreat, medications and supplements are not taken unless specifically approved.
If you are taking prescribed medication, tell us exactly what you take. If that medication must be stopped far enough in advance to avoid an unsafe interaction with ayahuasca, we will state this as a condition of participation. You decide whether to make that change and attend. Before changing prescribed medication, we recommend first obtaining information from the doctor who prescribed it about the risks and a safe way to reduce or discontinue it. If you decide to proceed, tell us what you actually changed and when you took the last dose so that we can assess the required interval and eligibility.
