Indigenous cultures in different parts of the Amazon have worked with it for generations as part of healing, cleansing, self-knowledge and spiritual life. Individual traditions differ in the plants they use, the way the medicine is prepared, their healing songs and the course of the ceremony itself.

The brew affects consciousness and can bring about intense psychological, emotional and physical experiences. Its effects, however, cannot be separated from the setting, a person’s health, their preparation, and the experience of the people leading the ceremony. Ayahuasca is not suitable for everyone, and its natural origin alone does not mean that its use is free of risk.

This guide explains what ayahuasca is and what it is made from, how a traditional ceremony unfolds, what effects and risks it may have, how to prepare for it, and how to recognize responsible guidance. It brings together a traditional Amazonian perspective, many years of practical experience and current professional knowledge, without promising rapid or guaranteed healing.

This page is intended for international readers, including visitors from the United States. It is most commonly prepared from the vine Banisteriopsis caapi and other plants, depending on the particular tradition and the way an individual healer works. It is used differently in different regions of South America—the way the ceremony is led, the healing approach and the overall context all vary.

From a pharmacological perspective, a common form of ayahuasca combines the vine Banisteriopsis caapi, which contains beta-carbolines with a reversible inhibitory effect on MAO-A, with plants containing DMT, most often Psychotria viridis or Diplopterys cabrerana. It is precisely the inhibition of MAO-A that allows DMT to become active when ingested. Professional sources are listed below.

For some people, ayahuasca is primarily a spiritual experience; for others, it is a profound psychological process, a cleansing, or a tool for self-knowledge. It is not, however, an attraction or a universal solution to everything. Much depends on a person’s readiness, the quality of the guidance, and the setting in which the ceremony takes place.

The origin and history of ayahuasca

The precise beginnings of ayahuasca use cannot be dated reliably. Its use is, however, deeply rooted in the Indigenous traditions of the Amazon region, and Western botanical descriptions of the vine Banisteriopsis caapi date back to the nineteenth century, when the British botanist Richard Spruce described it during his travels through the Amazon.

Today, the term “ayahuasca” encompasses various local traditions, recipes and ways of working. It is therefore inaccurate to understand it merely as a single, chemically standardized substance. The cultural context, the combination of plants used, and the way the ceremony is led differ across regions of the Amazon.

How an ayahuasca ceremony unfolds

The course of an ayahuasca ceremony can differ greatly according to the country, tradition and individual healer. In an authentic Indigenous context, it is not simply about drinking a brew, but about an entire healing and spiritual framework that includes preparation, the work carried out during the ceremony, and subsequent integration.

A typical ceremony is held at night, often in silence or accompanied by traditional healing songs. Participants go through their own process, which can be physically and psychologically intense. It may include cleansing, strong emotions, insights, confronting aspects of one’s own life, and a deep sense of connection.

If you would like to know how a ceremony with us unfolds in detail—from preparation and the work of the Indigenous healer to individual cleansing and integration—read our page about the course of an ayahuasca ceremony.

Would you like to see what a responsibly guided experience looks like in practice?
Explore the Feather Crown Ayahuasca Retreat Ecuador overview, or see our 10-day retreat program, including its facilities and the way our ceremonies are conducted.

Ayahuasca experiences vary greatly

An experience with ayahuasca is not the same for everyone. Alongside an altered state of consciousness, it can bring intense emotions, physical cleansing, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, or the opening of sensitive issues. For this very reason, it is not suitable for everyone and its use requires a responsible approach.

A participant’s health, the medications they use, their psychological history and the quality of the guidance are all crucial. Safety is not an optional extra; it is the foundation. A powerful experience alone is not enough. It is important for a person to be in a setting where the work is carried out responsibly, ethically, and with respect for participants’ boundaries.

You can find more on this subject in our health, medication and safety requirements.

How to prepare for ayahuasca

The following rules and recommendations apply specifically to participants in our Feather Crown retreat; they are not a universal guide for working with ayahuasca outside our program.

Tell us truthfully about all physical and psychological conditions, medications, supplements, herbal remedies, allergies, and recent use of psychoactive substances. Limited religious-use exemptions have been recognized in specific cases, but they do not make personal possession, preparation, importation or use generally legal. State and local policies can differ and do not necessarily change federal law.

International visitors should never assume that ayahuasca may be carried across a border or through a transit country. Long-term benefit also depends on subsequent integration, everyday decisions, and sometimes professional support.

Myth: The stronger the dose, the better the result

The intensity of an experience is not a measure of the quality or depth of the work. A smaller dose, or participation without drinking, may be more appropriate for some people. Safety, correct timing, and the ability to process the experience are more important than its intensity.

Myth: Being natural means ayahuasca is always safe

Natural substances can have powerful effects and interact with a person’s medications or health conditions. A responsible approach therefore includes health screening, truthful disclosure of every medication, and respect for contraindications.

Myth: Anyone who has drunk ayahuasca several times can lead a ceremony

Personal experience of drinking is not the same as long-term training, knowledge of traditional practices, and the ability to work safely with people in challenging states. When choosing a place, it is therefore essential to verify the experience of both the healer and the support team.

Don Carlos, a Kichwa shaman who leads ayahuasca ceremonies

The importance of authentic tradition

In the Amazon, ayahuasca is not understood merely as a psychoactive brew. Indigenous peoples have worked with it for many generations and have created an entire healing and ritual framework around it: knowledge of the plants and preparation of the medicine, selection of the dose, healing songs, cleansings, rules for leading a ceremony, and care for a person during the process. Figuratively speaking, ayahuasca can be understood as a technology that individual Amazonian traditions have had the opportunity to observe, test and gradually refine over generations.

This multigenerational experience is extraordinarily valuable, but Indigenous origin alone does not guarantee safety. The healer’s personal integrity, an ethical approach, health screening, respect for participants’ boundaries, enough sober assistants, and the ability to respond to the needs of a modern person are equally important.

We therefore consider the most effective approach to be a combination of an experienced Indigenous shaman and Western facilitators. The shaman holds the traditional healing framework and leads the work with the medicine; the facilitators ensure ethical rules, clear communication, preparation, safety protocols, practical support and subsequent integration. Bringing these two worlds together helps create a framework that respects the original tradition while also working for a modern Western person.

Our ceremonies are led by experienced Indigenous healers whose work is affirmed by many positive participant reviews. You can learn more about them and the role of the entire support team on our Our Team page.

As interest in ayahuasca grows, so does the number of places offering it. The use of traditional names, clothing or music alone does not guarantee quality guidance. What matters more is the healer’s genuine experience, safety protocols, the origin of the medicine, group size, and care before and after the ceremony.

Area

Responsibly guided traditional work

Warning signs of an overly commercial approach

Guidance

An experienced healer with long-term practice and clear responsibility

Unclear training or guidance based on only a few personal experiences

Safety

Health screening, attention to contraindications, and a sober support team

Downplaying risks, medications, and a person’s mental or physical health

Group

The number of participants matches the capacity of the healer and assistants

Large groups without sufficient individual attention

Preparation and integration

Clear advance instructions and space to process the experience after the ceremony

Focusing only on the powerful experience itself, without subsequent support

Communication

Realistic expectations, openness and no guarantees of healing

Promises of rapid transformation or a universal solution to problems

When choosing a place, ask who leads the ceremony, how long they have been doing this work, whether health screening takes place, how many sober assistants are present, and how possible complications are handled.
