Our intention is not simply to produce enough medicine for our ayahuasca retreats. We want to care for the plants as part of a living rainforest and ensure that the ayahuasca used in our ceremonies remains connected to the land, the Indigenous traditions, and the experienced healers who have protected its knowledge.

As international interest in ayahuasca grows, so does the pressure placed upon wild vines in parts of the Amazon. Cultivating ayahuasca responsibly helps reduce future dependence on plants harvested elsewhere while preserving healthy, mature vines for the generations that follow. For us, regenerative ayahuasca cultivation is therefore part of a wider commitment: to receive from the forest without gradually diminishing it.

A Living Collection of Amazonian Vines

Feather Crown maintains a diverse collection of ayahuasca vines originating from different parts of the Amazon. They include varieties from several areas of Ecuador, as well as vines connected to different Indigenous peoples and healing traditions.

Some of our most important vines were passed on to us by the shamans who lead ceremonies at Feather Crown. These are not anonymous plants obtained through a commercial supplier. They carry a living continuity with the healers who have cultivated, selected, prepared, and worked with them over many years.

Our resident shamans particularly value these lineages for the strength and depth of their effects. In their experience, the medicine prepared from them can produce profound visionary work while tending to cause less nausea than many other varieties. Every person and ceremony is different, so this is not a guarantee of a particular experience. Nevertheless, the qualities of a vine—together with its age, growing environment, preparation, and the knowledge of the healer—can influence the character of the medicine.

Cultivating Ayahuasca Within the Rainforest

Ayahuasca, or Banisteriopsis caapi, is naturally a forest vine. It does not exist separately from the trees, soil, water, shade, microorganisms, insects, and changing conditions of the Amazonian ecosystem.

Our vines are cultivated within the environment to which they belong. The surrounding forest provides support trees and a complex living habitat rather than reducing cultivation to an isolated plantation. This enables us to preserve both the medicine and the ecological relationships that allow it to grow.

The 23 hectares cared for by Feather Crown provide space for vines of different origins and stages of maturity. Younger plants represent our future supply, while established vines preserve the strength and continuity of the original lineages entrusted to us.

Because ayahuasca develops over many years, this work requires patience. Planting a vine is an investment in a future that may extend far beyond the next retreat season. Its value cannot be measured only by how quickly it can be harvested.

Why Diversity Matters

Maintaining vines from different regions and Indigenous traditions creates a living botanical collection. This diversity is valuable both culturally and ecologically.

Different varieties may respond differently to soil, shade, humidity, disease, and changes in the local climate. Preserving several lineages therefore makes the garden more resilient than depending upon a single type of vine.

It also honours the diversity of Amazonian plant knowledge. Ayahuasca is not one uniform tradition, recipe, or experience. Numerous Indigenous peoples have developed their own ways of recognising, cultivating, preparing, and working with the medicine.

We do not consider these plants or the knowledge surrounding them to be something Feather Crown has invented or owns. We understand ourselves as temporary custodians participating in a much older story.

Harvesting with the Future in Mind

Regenerative cultivation requires a different relationship with time. A vine should not be treated as a disposable material to be exhausted for immediate use.

Our long-term intention is to cultivate enough healthy ayahuasca that harvesting can remain selective and measured. Mature plants can continue living and regenerating when only appropriate sections are taken and their roots and principal structures are protected.

At the same time, new vines can be propagated from the most valued lineages. This allows the qualities recognised by our shamans to continue without placing unnecessary pressure on old plants or wild populations.

The guiding question is not simply how much medicine can be produced. It is how the medicine can be cultivated so that the forest, the plants, and the people connected to them remain healthy.

Cultural Responsibility

Ecological sustainability cannot be separated from cultural responsibility. Ayahuasca has been preserved through generations of Indigenous observation, ceremony, discipline, and relationship with the forest.

Growing the vine while ignoring its cultural origins would reproduce the same extractive mentality that threatens the Amazon in other forms. For this reason, our cultivation remains connected to the shamans who guide our work and to our wider relationships with Amazonian communities.

This means respecting the authority of Indigenous knowledge holders, recognising the origins of the medicine, and ensuring that the growing international interest in ayahuasca also creates meaningful benefits for Amazonian people.

At Feather Crown, this is part of a broader practice of reciprocity that includes stable local employment, cooperation with Indigenous communities, support for community-led projects, rainforest conservation, and the protection of sacred places such as the Piatúa River.

Cultivation as Reciprocity

The forest gives us the plants, water, food, shelter, and conditions that make our work possible. Regenerative ayahuasca cultivation is one way of giving something back.

By planting for the future, protecting diverse vine lineages, and allowing ayahuasca to grow within a living forest, we seek to maintain a cycle in which receiving is accompanied by care.

Our aim is not to transform ayahuasca into another Amazonian commodity. It is to preserve a living medicine and the relationships surrounding it. Every vine planted today expresses a responsibility to the people, plants, and ceremonies of the future.

This work will continue to evolve as we learn from our resident shamans, observe the plants, and listen to the forest itself. Regeneration is not a finished achievement. It is a long-term commitment to leave the land and its living systems stronger than we found them.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Feather Crown is cultivating and preserving ayahuasca within 23 hectares of protected land in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
