During a single night, a person may experience intense emotions, physical sensations, memories, visions, or experiences for which they do not yet have clear words. Some things make sense immediately; others only begin to come together over the following days. We write in more detail about the different forms the experience can take on the page about the effects of ayahuasca.

That is why we consider ayahuasca integration an important part of the entire ayahuasca retreat. For us, it is not only about a person recounting their experiences to the shaman and receiving an interpretation of them. We look at the experience from several different perspectives and try to help the person understand not only what happened during the ceremony, but also how they can continue working with it.

The traditional healer brings the perspective of the Amazonian tradition. The ceremony organizer helps place the experience in the context of the work with the medicine and of everyday life. A psychologically informed team member can offer another way of understanding certain emotions or psychological processes. None of these perspectives, however, is the final word. The participant always remains the authority on the meaning of their own experience.

First, Everyone Is Given Space to Share Their Experience

During the integration meeting, each participant is gradually given space. There is no need to describe every minute of the ceremony. It is more important to focus on what stood out most during the night: how strongly the person felt the medicine, what was most challenging or, on the contrary, most beautiful, what emotions arose, whether they had visions, and whether something came up that they do not yet understand.

The other participants do not interrupt the sharing, and the person has the opportunity to finish their story at their own pace. We try not to interrupt the integration circle unnecessarily.

It is equally important to know that no one has to share everything. Some experiences can be very personal and need time before a person even begins to talk about them.

If a more serious or very private topic arises during the sharing and deserves deeper attention, we may suggest a separate conversation after the integration circle has ended.

The Shaman’s Traditional Perspective

After the sharing, the Indigenous healer is given space. His role is to offer a perspective based on the tradition in which he has studied for many years. He may speak about individual cleansing, energies, the effects of the plants, spiritual healing, or what he perceived in the person during the ceremony.

An important part of the conversation is also that the shaman checks whether he has understood the participant’s experience correctly. For example, when he repeats part of the story, it does not necessarily mean that he is interpreting something for the person. He is often simply reflecting what he heard.

If he understood something differently from what the participant intended, that is not a problem. It is precisely this reflection that can reveal a misunderstanding and create space to clarify it.

The Shaman’s Interpretation Is Not the Only Possible Meaning

A traditional healer may understand a particular image, animal, or event in a certain way within his tradition. But a person does not have to immediately accept that this is the only or definitive meaning of their experience.

For example, we might say:

Don Carlos understands this image in a certain way within his tradition. But you do not have to decide today that this is its only meaning. You can observe what this image means to you and whether this interpretation will continue to make sense to you over the coming days.

For us, integration is not a process in which someone else tells a person what their ceremony meant. The purpose is to offer different contexts and give the experience time.

The Role of the Ceremony Organizer

The ceremony organizer has a different role in integration than the shaman. The organizer knows the participant from the preparation and health screening, observes the course of their process during the ceremony, and has an overview of how much medicine the person received and how they responded to it.

The organizer can therefore help explain why the experience was exceptionally strong or, on the contrary, subtle, what was probably happening during the night, and whether it would be appropriate to increase, reduce, or keep the amount of medicine the same at the next ceremony.

We consider recommendations for the next dose an important part of integration during the retreat. A stronger experience does not automatically mean a better experience.

Sometimes the most important recommendation may be very practical: reduce the amount of medicine at the next ceremony and give the person more space to work with what has already opened up.

A Psychologically Informed Perspective

Some questions are not related to shamanic work or to the amount of ayahuasca. They may concern relationships, emotions, trauma, inner conflicts, or how to incorporate the experience into everyday life.

In such a case, it is more honest to say that the question belongs more to the psychological realm than to a traditional shamanic interpretation.

Your question is more psychological in nature than a question for the shaman. I would therefore look at it from this perspective.

A psychologically informed team member can offer another perspective without denying or correcting the healer’s traditional perspective.

Each Question Belongs to Someone Different

During integration, we try to distinguish which area a particular question actually belongs to.

Traditional healing, energies, limpia, spiritual work – the Indigenous healer.

The course of the ceremony, response to the medicine, dosing, and practical integration – the ceremony organizer.

Emotions, psychological processes, and relationship topics – a psychologically informed team member.

Our aim is not for one person to explain everything. Each team member brings different experience, and it is precisely the combination of multiple perspectives that can be useful to the participant.

Multiple Perspectives on One Experience

Sometimes we can look at the same ceremony in several ways.

For example, the shaman may say that even during a very challenging experience, he perceived protective spiritual forces and a healing process around the person.

At the same time, the organizer may recommend that the person receive a smaller amount of medicine at the next ceremony.

A psychologically informed team member may add that the experience can also be understood differently in terms of emotions, defense mechanisms, or the person’s personal story.

These perspectives do not have to contradict one another. They describe the same experience from different sides.

Sometimes There Is No Need to Find an Answer Immediately

A powerful experience can create a need to understand everything immediately. What did a particular vision mean? What should I do now? Does it mean that I should change my job, my relationship, or my entire life?

It is not always helpful to create a quick answer.

Some questions need several days or weeks before their meaning begins to reveal itself naturally. At such a moment, the best response may simply be a recommendation to allow more time and not make major decisions based solely on one intense night.

We cannot answer this question for you. We recommend giving it more time. You do not need to know the correct meaning of everything right now.

From Grand Interpretations to Small, Concrete Steps

One useful integration question is:

Is there something small and concrete that you want to carry from this experience into the coming days?

Integration does not have to mean an immediate life revolution. It is often far more meaningful to focus on one small change: communicating differently with someone close to you, resting more, paying attention to your body, changing a particular habit, or giving more space to a topic that opened up during the ceremony.

It is through these concrete changes that the experience can gradually move from the ceremony into everyday life.

When a Topic Appears That Needs Deeper Work

Some questions are not appropriate to address in front of the whole group.

If a person opens a more serious psychological, health-related, or personal topic, we may recommend meeting separately after the circle has ended and discussing the matter in greater detail.

Similarly, it may be possible to consult the organizer individually about further work with plants, or the shaman about options for traditional energetic healing.

These conversations, however, do not belong in the shared circle. During group integration, we do not discuss prices, money, or organizational matters. We want to keep the focus on people’s experiences and their process.

Integration Needs Calm and Continuity

For a high-quality integration circle, it is important that the activity has its own space and is not constantly interrupted.

Organizational information, transport, or the schedule of other activities is addressed before integration or only after it. The interpreter remains present for as long as interpretation is genuinely needed. If someone needs a short break, it is better to announce it openly than simply to disappear.

We likewise protect the space of the person who is currently sharing. If someone begins to interrupt them, we ask that person to wait until it is their turn.

The integration circle ends only when all participants have been given space and the entire process has truly been brought to a close.

Integration Continues After the Circle Has Ended

The integration meeting is an important part of the retreat, but integration itself of course does not end when the meeting concludes.

Some experiences only begin to come together over the following days. Some symbols or emotions are understood only after the person returns to everyday life.

That is why we do not recommend trying to explain or close everything immediately. Ayahuasca can open a process that also needs to continue in everyday relationships, decisions, and ways of living.

If you would like to better understand what precedes integration itself, also read the article How an Ayahuasca Ceremony Takes Place in the Amazon. For people who are only considering their first experience, we have also prepared the guide Ayahuasca for the First Time.

The Goal Is Not to Explain the Ceremony for the Person

Ayahuasca can show many things, but it does not decide for a person what they will do with them.

Integration is therefore a bridge between the ceremony and everyday life.

Sometimes a person leaves with a clear understanding. At other times, with a question. And sometimes the healthiest thing is to admit that we simply do not yet know the meaning of a particular experience.

Our task is not to tell the participant what they must take away from their ceremony. We want to create a space in which they can hear the shaman’s traditional perspective, the experience of people who have long accompanied work with ayahuasca, a psychologically informed perspective, and finally, above all, their own inner voice.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ayahuasca Integration

What Does Ayahuasca Integration Mean?

Ayahuasca integration means gradually processing the experience from the ceremony and placing it in the context of everyday life. It is not only about interpreting visions, but also about understanding emotions, responses to the medicine, personal topics, and practical steps that may arise from the experience.

Does Integration Take Place Only With the Shaman?

No. At our retreat, we connect the traditional perspective of the Indigenous healer, the experience of the ceremony organizer, and a psychologically informed perspective. Each of these approaches has a different role.

Do I Have to Share Everything During Integration?

No. Sharing is voluntary. Some experiences may remain private or can be addressed individually outside the group circle.

Does the Shaman Tell Me What My Vision Means?

The shaman may offer an interpretation based on his tradition, but we do not automatically consider it the only possible meaning of the experience. The participant has space to observe whether this perspective also makes sense to them over the following days.

Is Dosing for the Next Ceremony Also Discussed During Integration?

Yes. Based on how the previous experience unfolded, the ceremony organizer may recommend whether to increase, reduce, or keep the amount of medicine the same at the next ceremony.
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://feathercrown.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/57425192_404003903710736_5159018783565676544_n.jpg” alt=”ayahuasca ceremony organizer and Indigenous shaman” title_text=”ayahuasca ceremony organizer and Indigenous shaman” _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” max_width=”50%” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_code admin_label=”SCHEMA ARTICLE – JAN ROSTLINKA” _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_code][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"FAQPage","@id":"https://feathercrown.com/ayahuasca-integration/#faq","mainEntity":[{"@type":"Question","name":"What does ayahuasca integration mean?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Ayahuasca integration means gradually processing the experience from the ceremony and placing it in the context of everyday life.
